Are Some Medicines Off-Limits During Pregnancy?

I just found out that I'm pregnant. Are there some medicines I can't take now?
Selena

Yes, there are many medicines to avoid during pregnancy. Even common over-the-counter (OTC) medicines might be off-limits because of possible effects on a developing baby. Some prescription medicines also can cause problems, as can herbal remedies and supplements.

Talk with your doctor:

  • if you already take medicine for a health condition. They can talk with you about the pros and cons of taking it during pregnancy.
  • before you take any medicines. These include prescriptions, OTC medicines, herbal remedies, and supplements. You'll want to be sure they're OK during pregnancy, even if they seem like no big deal.

Be sure to tell any other health care providers you see that you're pregnant.
