Akron Children's Hospital touches the lives of thousands of families each year by providing quality, family-centered care to infants, children and teens.

Our mission, however, goes beyond traditional patient care activities. As advocates for children, we strive to enhance the quality of life for all children by keeping them healthy, happy and safe.

We accomplish this mission through an array of programs and outreach activities in collaboration with health care networks, community organizations and businesses at the local, state and national level.

 

Parent Advisor Program
Akron Children's Parent Advisor Program is a way for parents and guardians to offer input that impacts patient care.

 

Parent Mentor Program
Akron Children's Parent Mentor Program connects parents with other parents who have similar medical experiences.

 

Parent Partners
Akron Children's Parent Partners use their personal experiences to provide support to other parents who have a child experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Nurturing Families Program is a partnership between Akron Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Cares that is designed to provide families with the skills needed to make good, healthy lifestyle choices.

Bereavement Services

Good Mourning Grief Support Series
Six-week Good Mourning Support group is designed to help children and their parents understand and deal with feelings of grief resulting from the death of a loved one. Sessions are led by trained Akron Children's Hospital and community professionals.

An information and support series for bereaved parents, co-facilitated by professionals and bereaved parents. There is no cost for this program. The group meets at Akron Children's Hospital, Locust Professional Building, Suite 540.

A pregnancy and infant loss support group. Open group. Run by parents for parents. Also offers telephone and email support and newsletter. Available for educational seminars. The group meets at Akron Children's Hospital in the Considine Professional Building, Rooms 7 & 8.

Provides emotional and informational support to families who have lost their child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or other infant death. A self-help gathering. Professional and parent facilitators and newsletter.

The Compassionate Friends
Self-help organization offering friendship, understanding and hope to bereaved families who have experienced the death of a child. Led by parent facilitators. The meetings are at Akron Children's in the Considine Professional Building.

Breastfeeding Support Services

Nurturing Spring Breastfeeding Mothers Support Group
A board-certified lactation consultant provides assistance, support, discussion and informational sessions. The sessions are at Akron Children's Hospital in the Considine Professional Building.

Amish and Mennonite Burn Survivor Support Group
Meetings are quarterly and move about the Amish communities.

Burn Survivors' Group
Provides an environment for exchanging ideas and acquiring information to cope with everyday problems. Topics are presented monthly regarding common problems and issues related to the burn survivor. The group meets at Akron Children's burn center. Sponsored by Akron Children's Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute and Aluminum Cans for Burned Children (ACBC).

Cancer and Blood Disorders Support Services

Camp Ed Bear
Previously called Camp CHOPS, this annual camp is for children ages 6-16 with cancer and blood disorders. Provides chance to meet other children with similar diagnoses for fun and support.

Former and present childhood cancer and blood-related disorder patients join together for support and celebration one day each year.

NEOMED Buddy Program
A program matching first-year medical students from Northeast Ohio Medical University with a child coping with cancer or a blood disorder. The students offer friendship and support to the children as they gain insight into how a life-threatening illness impacts patients and their families. Matches are made in September and continue through June. Social worker meets with both parties throughout the program.

Annual camp for children and teens ages 9-14 affected by type 1 diabetes and under the care of the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Akron Children's Hospital

Diabetes Support Group - Mahoning Valley
Diabetes Support Group (Mahoning Valley) - A support group for individuals and families in the Youngstown-Warren area whose lives are impacted by any form of diabetes diagnosis. The events bring children facing similar diagnoses together for an entertaining and educational experience.

Teens Supporting Teens with Scoliosis
Meetings create an atmosphere for teens to discuss their questions and concerns with others who live with similar conditions. The group meets at the Akron Children's Mahoning Valley Beeghly Campus in Boardman in Community Room C.
