The Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital is dedicated to the support, protection, and welfare of children by working to enhance community involvement, increase advocacy and raise funds for the Hospital.

The Women's Board's 3 major fundraisers are the:

Volunteers log countless hours, whether checking credentials at the villas at the annual Bridgestone Tournament, selling lights for the annual Christmas tree lighting celebration or encouraging school children to be safe.

In 2008, the Women's Board dedicated the Children's Garden of Hope & Healing. The garden serves as an extension of the holistic, family-centered care provided at Akron Children's Hospital.

In 2010, the Women's Board was recognized for their years of service and awarded the 5th annual Children's Champion award. The Children's Champion award is given away each year to an individual or group that displays a philanthropic spirit and passion for Akron Children's Hospital.

In 1890, two circles of The Daughters of the King - The Heart and Hand Circle at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and The Wayside Circle at First Congregational - established a Day Nursery to give a home during the day to the children of working women. The two groups would evolve to become what is now known as the Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital, and more than 125 years later, the Day Nursery has grown to become Akron Children’s Hospital.

The Women’s Board supports the mission of Akron Children’s Hospital with the highest standards of duty, loyalty and engagement.

The Women’s Board focuses activity on three specific areas:

  • Children’s Health Advocacy: Advocating, educating and promoting policies that have a positive impact on the health of children.
  • Hospital Liaison Activities: Supporting patients and families through hospital program participation and/or financial support.
  • Fundraising: Enhancing community relations and raising funds to support the hospital. This work is realized through events and onsite hospital gift shops.

Home Safe Home program

As part of the Home Safe Home outreach program, each fall, members of the Women’s Board visit second graders in the Akron Public Schools to teach them about how to avoid injuries at home. This interactive program focuses on injury prevention and utilizes both hands-on learning and a specially-created coloring book to help keep kids safe.

Advocating for children

Members of the Women’s Board play a vital role in advocating for the well-being of all children. Members regularly visit with state representatives to help reinforce the hospital’s legislative priorities.

Run by both the Women’s Board and hospital staff, Akron Children’s has gift shops at its Akron and Beeghly campuses. The Akron campus has two gift shops – one in the Atrium lobby of the main building and one in the Kay Jewelers Pavilion.

These gift shops sell snacks, greeting cards, newspapers, balloons, toys, and other items. The Akron atrium gift shop also sells fresh flowers.

If you can’t visit one of our gift shops, but wish to have a gift delivered to a patient, call 330-543-8782. Our friendly Gift Shop staff are happy to help you select the right flowers or gift and will also help you put together a gift basket. If you purchased a gift from outside the hospital and wish to have it delivered, hospital volunteers will take them to patient rooms.

All proceeds from the gift shop benefit Akron Children’s Hospital.
