A to Z: Mononeuritis Multiplex

May also be called: Multiple Mononeuropathy

Mononeuritis (mon-oh-noo-RIH-tis) multiplex is nerve damage that affects two or more nerves in different parts of the body.

More to Know

Mononeuritis means inflammation of a single nerve. When two or more nerves become inflamed, the condition is called mononeuritis multiplex. Mononeuritis multiplex is a group of symptoms and not a disease. It can be caused by a number of different conditions, including vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels), diabetes, arthritis, and other diseases that affect the nerves.

Symptoms of mononeuritis multiplex include loss of sensation, weakness, or paralysis in one or more parts of the body; loss of bladder or bowel control; and tingling, burning, or pain in one or more parts of the body.

Treatment for mononeuritis multiplex involves treating the condition that is damaging the nerves, taking medications to control pain, and undergoing therapy to maintain strength and range of motion in the affected parts of the body.

Keep in Mind

Successfully treating the cause of mononeuritis multiplex can lead to a full recovery. However, nerve inflammation that goes on for too long can lead to permanent nerve damage, so treatment should be started as soon as possible after symptoms become apparent.
