School Health Services
Flu Shot Availability
Why are yearly flu shots important? Flu shots reduce the risk of illness – so your child can stay in school, and you don't have to miss work – and lessen the severity if your child does get sick. Costs: Flu vaccines are covered by most private insurances and Medicaid, and there is no cost for those who are uninsured. Check with your insurance provider to confirm vaccine administration is a covered service at school. Requirements: See your school clinic nurse for a consent form. Bring the completed form to your school clinic one week before your appointment.
Akron Children's brings pediatric care directly to your child's school. We offer two levels of service: basic school health support in over 200 schools, and comprehensive health centers in select locations where students can see nurse practitioners for sick visits, well-child checkups, and sports physicals—all without leaving campus.

What Our School Nurses Do
Our dedicated nursing staff are in your child's school every day, providing:
- Care for injuries and illnesses during the school day
- Medication management and administration
- Chronic disease management
- Vision and hearing screenings
- Health education and immunization compliance support
Our Impact
92% of students return to class the same day after visiting the school nurse, helping them stay in school and keeping parents at work.
Immunization Services
Our traveling immunization team administers recommended childhood immunizations and yearly seasonal flu vaccines in school during the school day. This service is available in all schools where Akron Children's provides school nursing or school-based health services.
At our School-Based Health Centers, students have access to comprehensive primary care services with nurse practitioners available for well visits, sports physicals, immunizations, and treatment of acute illnesses - all delivered in a private, comfortable space at school.
How to Access Services
For treatment of minor illnesses during the school day: Your child's school nurse will contact you if they recommend a visit with our nurse practitioner. Be sure to have a signed consent form on file.
For well-child visits, sports physicals, or immunizations: Call 330-543-7242 to schedule an appointment at your child's school.
New to our services? Download and complete the consent form, then return it to your child's school nurse. This one-time consent allows our providers to treat your child when needed throughout the school year.

Q: What are School-Based Health Services
A: Quick, easy medical care at school. Akron Children’s school nursing staff and pediatric providers see kids and teens for private and confidential medical care at your child’s school.
Q: What are the benefits of School-Based Health Services?
A: They are:
>Convenient: you do not have to leave work or home for your child to receive medical care.
>Fast: prescriptions, if needed, are called into your preferred pharmacy.
>Informative: care plan and visit details are in MyChart (activation required) and can be mailed to your home upon request.
>Affordable: we care for any child in need. If you have private insurance or Medicaid, we bill for our services.
Q: How do I sign my child up for School-Based Health Services?
A: Complete the consent form and return it to your child’s school.
Q: What is a virtual school health visit?
A: During a virtual visit, your child is in the school nursing staff’s office and visits an Akron Children’s pediatric provider online through a computer or iPad. This is like using FaceTime on an iPhone.
Q: How do School-Based Health Services work?
A: During school hours, your child is initially evaluated by the Akron Children’s school nursing staff. If the nursing staff thinks that your child has a minor illness and would benefit from treatment by an Akron Children’s pediatric provider, they will request your permission for that to happen. Some schools also offer in-person appointments for annual well visits, sports physicals and vaccines. Appointments are required for these services. Call 330-543-7242 to schedule an appointment.
Q: Do School-Based Health Services cost money?
A: Yes, but no child is turned away due to inability to pay. We care for any child in need. If you have private insurance or Medicaid, we bill for our services. No copays or fees are collected at the school.
Q: Will my child see a pediatric provider every time they go to the school nursing staff?
A: No. Akron Children’s school nursing staff will continue to provide the same level of excellent care to your child. If the nursing staff thinks that your child has a minor illness and would benefit from treatment by an Akron Children’s pediatric provider, they will request your permission for that to happen.
Q: How will I know what took place during my child’s appointment?
A: The staff will attempt to reach you at the phone number provided on the consent form to discuss your child’s visit, any prescription information and recommended follow-up. Care plan and visit details are in MyChart (activation required) and can be mailed to your home upon request. Sign up for MyChart
Q: Will my child’s information and appointment be private?
A: Yes, appointments are held in a private room at the school. Only you, your child, the Akron Children’s pediatric provider and school nursing staff know what happens during the visit. If your child has a primary care provider, they will also receive the visit information.
Q: Does Akron Children’s need permission to provide School-Based Health Services?
A: Yes, School-Based Health Services by an Akron Children’s pediatric provider are only provided with your consent. Every child needs a parent/guardian signed consent form on file to be treated. If no signed consent is on file, a telephone consent can be obtained.
Q: Do School-Based Health Services replace my child’s primary care provider?
A: These services do not replace your child’s primary care provider. If your child doesn’t have a primary care provider, find a doctor or provider or call 330-543-7242 and the Akron Children’s School-Based Health Services team will help you find one.

How It Works
For Sick Visits During the School Day: Your child is first evaluated by the school nursing staff. If the nurse determines your child has a minor illness that would benefit from provider treatment, they will contact you to request permission for a visit with our nurse practitioner. The visit can happen in-person or via telehealth, depending on your child's school.
For Well Visits, Physicals, and Immunizations: These services require scheduled appointments. Call 330-543-7242 to book a convenient time.
Telehealth Technology: Many of our schools use advanced Tytocare technology for virtual visits. During a telehealth appointment, our nurse practitioner can hear your child's heart and lung sounds and examine their ears, nose, and throat—providing a thorough exam even when not physically present at the school that day.
Why Parents Choose School-Based Health Centers
- Convenient – You don't have to leave work or arrange transportation. Your child receives quality medical care without leaving school.
- Fast – Same-day treatment means less time out of class. Prescriptions are called in to your preferred pharmacy immediately.
- Connected – Care plans and visit summaries are available in MyChart and shared with your child's primary care provider to ensure coordinated care.
- Accessible – We care for every child in need. If you have private insurance or Medicaid, we bill for our services. No copays or fees are collected at school, and no child is turned away due to inability to pay.
- Private – All appointments are held in a private room at the school. Your child's health information is confidential and protected.
Getting Started: To consent to School-Based Health Services, complete the consent form and return it to your child's school. You can also call 330-543-7242 for questions or to request a form.
These services complement - not replace - your child's primary care provider. If your child doesn't have a pediatrician, we can help you find one. Our providers work collaboratively with local pediatricians and Akron Children's specialists to provide seamless, coordinated care.
