A to Z: Open Wound, Tongue

May also be called: Cut

An open wound of the tongue means a cut, break, or puncture of the surface of the tongue.

More to Know

Tongue wounds often result from an accidental bite during eating or a fall. These types of wounds rarely need stitches and usually heal quickly on their own.

Seek immediate medical attention if the wound is gaping or bleeding will not stop. Also seek care for any wound that causes severe pain or difficulty breathing or swallowing, or is associated with facial or dental injuries.

Keep in Mind

After a child receives medical attention for a tongue wound, follow instructions carefully. Sometimes, the doctor might recommend a soft diet for a few days. Infections of mouth injuries are rare, but can happen.
