Includes specialty programs: Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program

Healthy Active Living

When it comes to weight management, every child’s needs are different.  We use a personalized approach to support your child for success in both losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

We have one focus: kids.

The Healthy Active Living program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children and teens who are overweight. Our multidisciplinary team at the Akron campus cares for patients with more serious weight-related issues. Our team includes a physician, psychologist, certified nurse practitioner, dietitian and exercise physiologist.

Healthy Active Living sessions are available at regional sites, led by a pediatrician who specializes in obesity medicine. This regional program consists of five visits that provide education on food choices, sleep and exercise. Each session is billed to your insurance like a regular medical visit. Ask your pediatrician about the location nearest you.

Regardless of the program option you choose, we will address the medical, psychological, nutritional and fitness aspects of your child’s weight issue.

What to expect.

At the Akron location or regional sites, we will provide an initial assessment to identify barriers to treatment, determine motivation to make lifestyle changes and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Follow-up visits in Akron may include some or all of the following team members: medical provider, registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, pediatric psychologist and social worker.

Follow-up visits at regional sites include four, one-hour weekly educational sessions with a medical provider.

If you are interested in our services, please speak to your child’s physician or call the Healthy Active Living program at 330-543-5673, and ask about a location near you.

What Should Families Expect When They Come for an Appointment?

At Akron Children’s, your child’s health and safety is our priority. Please continue to bring your child for wellness visits, vaccinations or sick care appointments that keep children healthy. We want to assure you that we have taken additional precautions to ensure a safe environment for your child and family. The following are additional safety efforts, in addition to our normal cleaning protocols, that we are taking to help you be comfortable bringing your child to an appointment.
