Does Akron Children's offer summer camps?

Does Akron Children’s have summer camps for patients?
Some of our departments and services offer summer camps tailored for their patients while others can provide camps outside of Akron Children’s that serve the patient population. Please check with the social worker for the departments/services your child uses most.

How do I address my child’s worries about attending camp?
Try to “normalize” their anxiety by letting them know it’s OK to be nervous, but that it shouldn’t stop them from participating. Give ideas about how to solve problems like talking to a camp counselor and remind them that they may discover they enjoy something they didn’t expect like making new friends or new activities.

How do I help my child with homesickness during camp?
- Have them pack a few mementos from home to take to camp like a family photo or a stuffed animal.
-Let your child unplug. Excessive calls and texts home can increase homesickness.
- Remind them that talking with a camp counselor or friend can help when homesick.
- Provide pre-addressed, stamped envelopes for your camper to use to write letters. They may not use them, but may feel better about having them!

Does Akron Children’s offer a camp for their diabetes patients?
Yes. Staff in endocrinology organize this camp and the registration packet is available around mid-March each year, posted on the department page.

Does Akron Children’s offer a camp for their hematology and oncology patients?
Yes. Hematology-oncology staff organizes a yearly camp and the registration packet is available on their department page in early spring.
