Akron Children’s Hospital to hold beam signing event to mark the next phase of construction on emergency room expansion

March 2, 2022 (Akron, Ohio) -- On March 10 at 11 a.m., Akron Children’s will mark the end of the steel phase of construction on a new emergency department when employees, donors and other community representatives will sign the final steel beam. 

Ground was broken last fall on the $31 million construction project to expand the emergency department located on the hospital’s Boardman campus. The current emergency room is 9,600 square feet and will grow to 34,700 square feet when construction is expected to be completed in spring 2023.  

The new space will also feature:  

  • 23 treatment rooms (currently 17) 

  • 3 treatment rooms for behavioral health needs (currently 1) 

  • 2 triage rooms (currently 1)
