Maternal-Fetal Medicine Definitions

Perinatologist: an OB-Gyn with fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Also known as high-risk obstetricians. Provide outpatient and inpatient coverage.

OB-Gyn generalist: an OB-Gyn who covers deliveries for our MFM group and adolescent gynecology.

Neonatologist: a pediatrician with fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Also known as a newborn intensivist. Covers Neonatal Intensive Care Units (levels 3 and 4).

Newborn medicine physician: a pediatrician without fellowship training, but a clinical specialization in newborn care. Can have peds hospitalist fellowship, but is not specific to newborns. Covers Special Care Nurseries (level 2) and Newborn Nurseries (level 1).
