Dr. Patricia Raimer named medical director of Akron Children's PICU

02-23-2024 (Ohio)

Dr. Patricia Raimer has been named medical director of Akron Children’s Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PICU).

Dr. Raimer was recruited to Akron Children’s PICU team in 2016 to create and direct an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program at Akron Children’s, and it opened to patients in October 2017. ECMO is a life support system for patients whose heart and lungs are unable to provide adequate amounts of oxygen, gas exchange and blood supply.

Prior to joining Akron Children’s, Dr. Raimer was a pediatric critical care physician at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital from 2009 to 2015. She served as medical director of ECMO and critical care transport, and was a consultant for the Fetal Care Center.

Dr. Raimer also serves as an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Northeast Ohio Medical University.

After graduating from medical school at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, Dr. Raimer completed her pediatrics internship and residency at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan. She went on to complete additional training at the University of Michigan Medical School in clinical and epidemiological research, and then completed her pediatric critical care fellowship at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Raimer has authored numerous articles for academic journals.

“Dr. Raimer’s steadfast focus on delivering the most cutting edge, highest quality care, and her collaborative and growth mindset has led to the success of our ECMO program, which cares for the most critically ill children," said Dr. Shefali Mahesh, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Akron Children's. "In 2023, the Akron Children's ECMO program was awarded the designation of Center of Excellence (Gold level) through the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. I am excited about the opportunities that are ahead of us in critical care and cannot think of a better leader to take us to that next level."

Dr. Raimer resides in Hudson, Ohio and is a volunteer with the Flying Horse Farms Camp in Mt. Gilead, Ohio.
