Food Farmacy

Featured Image for Food Farmacy

Akron Children’s Food Farmacies were established to address food insecurity and improve access to nutritious food options for income-eligible patient families and hospital staff.  With Food Farmacy locations on our Akron and Boardman campuses, we operate choice food pantries, allowing families to select items as they would in a grocery store. Families are referred to the Food Farmacy through a simple referral process completed by their provider or hospital staff during social determinants of health screenings. Referrals are based on positive food insecurity screenings and income eligibility. The program places a particular focus on supporting children with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, food allergies, and cerebral palsy, helping to remove barriers and connect families to vital food resources.

The Food Farmacy was launched to help patient families combat food insecurity and improve their access to healthy food choices. Families who screen positive for food insecurity during their patient visits, and who meet income-eligibility requirements, are referred to the Food Farmacy pantry by the department staff. There is a particular focus on patients with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, food allergies, cerebral palsy, and others.

The Akron pantry is located in the Considine Professional Building between the Smucker’s Bistro and the Vision Center and the Boardman pantry is located in Bldg. A. For questions, contact foodfarmacy@akronchildrens.org.
