Athletic Training and Team Physician Services

Akron Children’s Hospital supports local student-athletes by providing athletic training services at dozens of local high schools. Our certified athletic trainers are an important part of the care team that includes coaches, parents and physicians. From injury prevention to customized rehabilitation programs, athletic trainers are dedicated to helping young athletes stay in the game.

Akron Children’s uses Healthy Roster, a HIPAA-compliant and secure mobile injury documentation tool with live chat and video features. It allows our athletic trainers to improve communication with coaches and parents about an injured athlete’s care and participation status. Healthy Roster is free to parents; parents can contact their school’s athletic trainer to be invited to use the app.

In addition to keeping high school athletes in the game, Akron Children’s partners with The University of Akron and Walsh University. Our agreement with The University of Akron includes physical therapy for student-athletes, on-site physician coverage for a variety of sports and the dance program, preseason physicals for student-athletes and referrals to specialists. For Walsh University, two Akron Children’s sports medicine fellows provide everything from coverage during home football games to twice weekly injury checks to sports physicals.

Akron Children’s Hospital is also the team medical provider for the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team.
