Syncope is a medical term for fainting. Other symptoms may include feeling lightheaded or dizzy. These symptoms can occur when there is a rapid drop in blood pressure and the brain does not get enough blood.

The first step in diagnosing and treating syncope is to rule out any heart problems. Your initial visit to the Akron Children’s Syncope Clinic may include an EKG echocardiogram or Holter monitor test. Further evaluation, if needed, may include tilt table testing or a stress test. Once heart problems are ruled out, the Syncope Clinic team will:

  •  Help patients learn the warning signs, so they can sit or lie down before fainting.

  • Teach patients about common triggers including dehydration, low blood sugar, extreme heat or strenuous exercise.

  • Create a customized care plan to reduce episodes of fainting.
