Meet Kim J., Parent Mentor at Akron Children's

Kim J.

Kim's Story

Hello. My name is Kim. My son, Luke, was diagnosed at age 3 with autism. He was a typically developing child, but started to regress prior to turning 2 years old. The words he was using such as juice, shoes, da da, ready-set-go, tree, etc. started slipping away until one day my sweet baby boy became non-verbal. He also seemed to lose the light within him and became less engaged with others. He smiled less, didn't seem to want hugs, kisses, or to be held. He was content being by himself and in his own world not noticing the people or things happening around him. He is now 7 years old and still remains non-verbal. He does however say "tickle" and has the most amazing beautiful smile and laughter. When you hear the words "your child has autism", there is often confusion, sadness, worry, fear, anger and an array of other emotions experienced. When my son was diagnosed, I really didn't know much about autism or what that would mean for my son and our family. Looking back, I am glad I didn't know. It has been rather challenging and I have learned to take life one day at a time. It can be devastating, but also new found strength and hope are part of this autism journey. I would love to help each and every one of you on your journey. Finding a support network of professionals, family and friends is so important. I look forward to hearing your story and how I can help you and your family.
