Dr. Anjay Khandelwal to lead Akron Children’s Hospital’s Burn Center

06-01-2021 (Akron, Ohio)

Anjay Khandelwal, M.D., has been named director of the Burn Center at Akron Children’s Hospital.

As director, Dr. Khandelwal will oversee the Burn Center’s specialized inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims of all ages throughout Northeast Ohio. The Burn Center has been recognized for its commitment to total burn care by the American Burn Association and The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

Dr. Khandelwal joined the hospital a year ago as a surgeon specializing in acute and reconstructive burn surgery and surgical critical care in the hospital’s Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute. Dr. John Crow, who previously served as director of the Burn Center, will continue to serve as Akron Children’s associate chief medical officer.

“Our regional burn center is an important resource in Northeast Ohio, and we are pleased to have someone with Dr. Khandelwal’s experience and skill take the reins,” said Dr. Robert McGregor, chief medical officer for Akron Children’s Hospital.

Prior to joining Akron Children’s, Dr. Khandelwal was a staff surgeon in the division of trauma, critical care, acute care surgery and burns at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he was director of the Burn Care Center and co-director of the Institute of Burn Ethics.

He earned his medical degree from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College in Karnataka, India, and completed his general surgery residency at Temple University/Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He completed a burn/burn reconstruction fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of North Carolina/UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Dr. Khandelwal is active in burn education, research, prevention and international outreach, and also founded India’s first and only recreational camp for burned children. He resides in Lakewood with his wife, Dr. Cathleen Khandelwal, and two daughters.

Akron Children's is the only pediatric hospital in the country that is verified to treat adult and pediatric burn patients. The Burn Center includes an outpatient clinic with adjacent inpatient unit with 12 beds, procedure room, triage room and dressing change rooms. It provides care ranging from pre-injury prevention efforts, acute care, complex reconstruction and complete rehabilitation.
