Akron Children’s new Amherst Health Center opens Dec. 7

12-07-2021 (Akron, Ohio )

Akron Children’s Hospital’s new $8.4 million Amherst health center will be a comprehensive and conveniently located hub of outpatient pediatric health care. Services will include primary care, rehabilitative services, specialty services, radiology and lab.

The Akron Children’s Health Center, Amherst, opens Dec. 7 at 47185 Cooper Foster Park Road. The one-story, 23,000 square-foot facility is part of Akron Children’s regional initiative to provide families with better access to pediatric care. In addition to the Amherst location, Akron Children’s recently opened an office in Sandusky.

“We’re committed to bringing care closer to where families live,” said Chris Gessner, president and CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital. “This Amherst health center offers a variety of outpatient services at one location, so families will enjoy the benefits of our pediatric expertise and close-to-home convenience.”

Akron Children’s facilities are designed “through the eyes of a child.” The new Amherst building features bright colors, large murals and a miniature ball machine – an audio-kinetic sculpture that has become a hallmark of Akron Children’s.

Amherst services will include:

Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics: The Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics network provides primary care for babies, kids and teens. Current offices in Lorain and Amherst are moving to the new Amherst health center. The Oberlin pediatrics office, located in the Chuang Medical Center, will remain at its current location.

The new Amherst primary care office features 12 spacious exam rooms and a staff of board-certified pediatricians, nurses and nurse practitioners. A behavioral health specialist will start seeing patients Monday, Dec. 13. The office phone number for primary care and behavioral health appointments is 440-960-6500.

Rehabilitative Services: Akron Children’s will offer audiology, physical, occupational and speech therapy. The rehab area features a gym for exercise, gross motor skill development and sensory integration. Sensory rooms feature crash pads, swings and tunnels to encourage active and exploratory play for patients with fine motor, cognitive, physical or sensory processing needs. Audiologists will provide hearing evaluations and hearing aid services. The office phone number is 440-960-6550

Pediatric Specialty Care: Specialty services will include cardiology, gastroenterology, maternal fetal medicine, nephrology, neurology, orthopedics and vision. Consultations and follow-up appointments for pediatric surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery will also be available. Each specialty provider will see patients on regularly scheduled days and times by appointment only. Additional specialties will be added to meet patients’ needs.

Radiology and Laboratory Services: On-site radiology and lab services will support providers in their diagnostic decisions. Whether it is taking an X-ray on an infant or drawing blood from a toddler, clinicians always take a child-friendly approach and follow best practices such as using the most minimal dose of radiation according to Image Gently® guidelines.

“Although Akron Children’s is relatively new to Lorain County, we have a 130-year history of

providing exceptional pediatric care,” Gessner shared. “Our new Amherst health center demonstrates our long-term commitment to caring for kids in and around Lorain County.”
