Shadow a Nurse Program

Akron Children's center of professional development provides students a chance to follow nurses throughout their work day to promote careers in nursing and provide students (starting at age 17 years) with a realistic view of the pediatric nursing profession. These experiences are coordinated by the Volunteer Services Department and the Clinical Instructor Program Coordinator.  Shadow a nurse experiences are available on specific dates and times throughout the year.

Application Process

High school students interested in shadowing should contact their school counselor to coordinate completing the experience through the school.  High school counselors, or students, if the counselor is not interested, should contact Jennifer Dirker to obtain more information. College nursing students with an interest in pediatrics may also submit an application.

The goal of our program is to encourage careers in nursing by helping students develop a deeper understanding of the pediatric nursing profession. The shadowing opportunity is strictly an observation experience. A student may witness the nurse making critical decisions, performing procedures such as caring for a wound or inserting an IV, and interacting with patients and their families.
