Primary Care Lunch and Learn: Antibiotic Stewardship Updates
01-27-2026
By Shankar Upadhyayula, MD , Director, Pediatric Infectious Disease, Akron Children's
Objectives (Educational Content) :
1.Describe the new draft of acute bacterial sinusitis guideline.
2. follow up on Lyme testing update and data on GAS in ACHP practice.
3. Discuss developing a scoring system for GAS pharyngitis to reduce unnecessary testing and treatment.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Clinicians managing common outpatient infections often lack up-to-date knowledge of evolving evidence and draft guidelines, including recent changes to acute bacterial sinusitis recommendations, updated Lyme disease testing guidance, and new data on Group A Streptococcus (GAS) patterns in pediatric practice. Without consistent understanding or standardized tools—such as validated scoring systems for GAS pharyngitis—providers may over test or overtreat, contributing to unnecessary antibiotic use and undermining stewardship efforts. Education is needed to close these knowledge and performance gaps and support more evidence-based diagnostic and prescribing practices.
