Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Elective

Objectives

• Gain exposure to different types of pediatric conditions associated with childhood disability and principles of rehabilitation that may be used to maximize functional outcomes
• Describe the major motor milestones, developmental reflexes and the developmental patterns of normal gait

Description

• The physical medicine and rehabilitation elective is designed to provide the student with educational and clinical exposure to both out-patient and hospital services. It will allow the student to participate in both general pediatric rehabilitation clinics and a wide variety of subspecialty, interprofessional clinics. Selected days will be dedicated to hospital rounds with the pediatric PM&R staff on-service, while other days will be designated for out- patient clinic. The student will be asked to participate in consults as deemed appropriate by the staff. To broaden experience in the out-patient clinic, the student will be assigned to work with a diverse group of staff. They will have an opportunity to observe the rehabilitative care to a wide variety of diagnoses including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, neuromuscular disease, acquired brain and spinal cord injury, stroke, and children with brachial plexus injury.
• The student will be exposed to an array of spasticity interventions and procedures, such as Botox injections and baclofen pumps. The student will also be required to attend all appropriate educational conferences, didactic teachings, and Grand Rounds.
