Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Elective

We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in child and adolescent psychiatry to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

  • Gain knowledge of the unique factors essential to the evaluation of children and adolescents
  • Recognize and diagnose common child psychiatric disorders
  • Develop the ability to establish rapport with children, adolescents and their families
  • Develop interview skills to elicit essential data from children and families
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform mental status examinations
  • Demonstrate the ability to develop psychiatric formulations and treatment plans
  • Improve the ability to present psychiatric cases

Description

  • Interview patients under the direct supervision of an attending child psychiatrist
  • Complete patient progress notes for follow-up patients
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for our inpatient unit and partial hospitalization program (PHP)
  • Attend and participate in different modality of group therapies in inpatient unit and PHP
  • Attend family sessions in inpatient unit and family therapy sessions in PHP 
  • Attend monthly Journal Club and clinical case presentations
  • Night call/special requirements: None
