Primary Care Lunch and Learn: Suicide Risk Assessment and Mitigation Strategies in Youth

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1.Improve ability to assess for suicidal risk in youth.

2.Identify options for addressing and mitigating suicide risk.

3.Recognize how to document pertinent details.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

There is a gap in current clinical practice in the consistent and accurate assessment, management, and documentation of suicide risk among youth. Many clinicians demonstrate variability in their ability to apply structured risk assessment approaches, identify and implement evidence-based mitigation strategies such as safety planning and appropriate referrals, and document key elements such as risk level, protective factors, and clinical decision-making. This results in missed opportunities to reduce risk, ensure continuity of care, and support optimal patient outcomes, highlighting the need for targeted education to improve competence in these areas.
