More about Julie Wei, MD, MMM, FAAP

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Explain exactly what tympanostomy tube achieves, misconceptions about pathology, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and treatment of acute otitis media vs. COME. 2. Distinguish between RAOM common in early infancy/toddlers, subsequent OME after acute viral URI, vs. chronic otitis media with effusion. What is in the fluid? why won't antibiotics work? 3. Develop clarity for timing of referrals to ENT and candidacy for BMT.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Ear pain is one of the most common complaints evaluated in the pediatric primary care office. Acute otitis media is often over diagnosed and over treated as provider for various reasons, including limited examination, inadequate training, and fear of patient complication without appropriate treatment. Further education is needed to improve provider knowledge on diagnosis and management of otitis media.
