Primary Care Lunch and Learn: Recognizing Vaccine Preventable Illnesses and Managing Fevers in the Under-Immunized Child
05-26-2026
By Evelyn Pangonis, MD MS FAAP , Medical Director, Infection Control and Prevention, Akron Children's
Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. Recognize symptoms of the infectious diseases prevented by childhood vaccination.
2. Describe the epidemiology of vaccine preventable illnesses
3. Describe the diagnosis, treatment, complications and prevention strategies.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Despite widespread vaccination programs, clinicians are increasingly encountering under-immunized children and may lack experience recognizing vaccine-preventable illnesses that are now less commonly seen in practice. This contributes to gaps in timely identification, appropriate evaluation, and management of febrile under-immunized pediatric patients, as well as inconsistent understanding of current epidemiology and prevention strategies. Targeted education is needed to improve clinicians’ ability to recognize clinical presentations, apply evidence-based diagnostic and treatment approaches, and support effective prevention and public health interventions.
