05-15-2026
By John D. Polousky, MD , Division Director, Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Akron Children's
Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. To understand the causes of shoulder injuries in overhead athletes.
2. To understand the diagnosis of shoulder injuries in overhead athletes.
3. To understand treatment options for shoulder injuries in overhead athletes.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Although shoulder injuries in throwing and overhead athletes are common and potentially career-altering, many clinicians lack consistent, up-to-date knowledge of the biomechanical causes, sport-specific injury patterns, and evidence-based diagnostic and treatment strategies for these conditions. In current clinical practice, providers may rely on nonspecific shoulder pain algorithms or general musculoskeletal examination techniques, which can lead to delayed diagnosis, inappropriate imaging utilization, and suboptimal treatment plans for overhead athletes
