Pediatric Sports Medicine Elective

We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in sports medicine to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of on-the-field evaluation of injuries
  • Introduce students to the office and clinical evaluation of sports-related problems in athletes
  • Gain an understanding of rehabilitation and physical therapy principles related to caring for athletes

Description

  • Spend time in our sports medicine center evaluating patients with sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, nurse practitioners and athletic trainers
  • Gain experience in performing pre-participation sports physical exams
  • Gain experience in the use of rehabilitation and physical therapy with the athletic trainers and physical therapists at our sports medicine center
  • Work directly with respective physicians for coverage of athletic events
  • Obtain exposure to other sports medicine considerations, including prevention of illness and injury, cardiology in sports, drugs in sports, sports biomechanics, and sports radiology
  • Prepare a 10-15 minute presentation on a unique patient or an update on one of the reading list articles provided
  • Have the option to explore other interests such as sports nutrition, sports vision, taping procedures, etc., from available resources at our sports medicine center
