Pediatric Rheumatology Elective

We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in rheumatology to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

  • Learn to take an adequate patient history, perform an examination, and diagnose and treat rheumatologic and immunologic diseases of children
  • Observe joint aspirations and injections
  • Learn about physical and occupational therapy diagnostic and treatment techniques for children
  • Understand the immunologic testing for autoimmune and immune deficiency diseases

Description

  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient clinics
  • Learn about various modes of therapy, including medications, physical and occupational therapy, and psychotherapy
  • Prepare for clinic and diagnoses by answering questions about patients and reading related literature
  • Report on the literature concerning inpatients and outpatients who are seen during the rotation
  • Write a case report with a review of the literature concerning an interesting patient
  • Complete a report on a topic provided by the division director
  • Typical daily schedule: 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday–Friday
  • Travel to the Mahoning Valley clinic once a week
  • Night call/special requirements: None
