Pediatric Pulmonology Elective

Objectives

• Obtain a pulmonary-oriented history and physical exam on pediatric patients.
• Express in writing (either EMR or on paper) and give an oral presentation of an appropriate H&P that includes an appropriate assessment and differential diagnosis for pediatric patients presenting with pulmonary-related concerns.
• Develop, with attending physician input, an appropriate management plan.
• Discuss the typical presentation, history and physical exam findings, treatment and response to treatment for typical pediatric pulmonary problems including asthma, chronic lung disease of prematurity, cystic fibrosis, respiratory issues related to congenital or genetic disorders, and sleep disorders.

Description

• The student will see patients in the outpatient Pediatric Pulmonary office and precept the patients with pediatric pulmonologists and other providers. Students will be exposed to a broad range of pediatric pulmonary disorders and will see common general pediatric pulmonary conditions as well as conditions that are uncommon or rare. Students will function within a multidisciplinary team for certain patients; will be exposed to pulmonary function testing, asthma teaching, screening allergy skin testing, and sleep studies. The schedule is weekdays only, generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no call or weekends.
