Pediatric Neurosurgery Elective

We offer a 4-week surgical subspecialty elective in pediatric neurosurgery to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

  • Explore facets of pediatric neurosurgery, including congenital anomalies, hydrocephalus, brain and spinal neoplasms, spasticity and epilepsy
  • Observe techniques used in the pediatric neurosurgery cases
  • Learn expectations of a neurosurgery residency, prepare for neurosurgery sub-I/AI

Description

  • Participate in inpatient clinical rounds and care including history, physicals and daily progress notes
  • Participate in outpatient clinic
  • Observe and assist with pediatric neurosurgical procedures
  • Participate in neuroradiology conference, neuropathology review, neuro-oncology tumor board and clinic
  • Typical daily schedule: 7 a.m. – whenever the work is completed
  • Night call/special requirements: every 3rd night, to participate in cases in the middle of the night (does not carry pager)
