Pediatric Neurosurgery Elective
We offer a 4-week surgical subspecialty elective in pediatric neurosurgery to 4th year medical students.
Objectives
- Explore facets of pediatric neurosurgery, including congenital anomalies, hydrocephalus, brain and spinal neoplasms, spasticity and epilepsy
- Observe techniques used in the pediatric neurosurgery cases
- Learn expectations of a neurosurgery residency, prepare for neurosurgery sub-I/AI
Description
- Participate in inpatient clinical rounds and care including history, physicals and daily progress notes
- Participate in outpatient clinic
- Observe and assist with pediatric neurosurgical procedures
- Participate in neuroradiology conference, neuropathology review, neuro-oncology tumor board and clinic
- Typical daily schedule: 7 a.m. – whenever the work is completed
- Night call/special requirements: every 3rd night, to participate in cases in the middle of the night (does not carry pager)
