Pediatric Infectious Disease Elective

We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in infectious disease to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

Gain an understanding of basic concepts in the diagnosis and management of common pediatric infectious illnesses
Review medical microbiology of clinical relevance
Develop expertise in antibiotic therapy for pediatric patients

Description

Inpatient consultative (consultation on patients with infections across settings including NICU, PICU, Oncology, surgical, and general pediatric services, as well as primary inpatient pediatric infectious disease service. Focuses are on: evaluation and treatment of common pediatric infections; basics of antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship. Optional outpatient pediatric infectious disease component, if desired by the student -- contact course preceptor in advance so a schedule can be arranged.
