Pediatric Infectious Disease Elective

    We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in infectious disease to 4th year medical students.

    Objectives

    • Gain an understanding of basic concepts in the diagnosis and management of common pediatric infectious illnesses
    • Review medical microbiology of clinical relevance
    • Develop expertise in antibiotic therapy for pediatric patients

    Description

    • Inpatient consultative (consultation on patients with infections across settings including NICU, PICU, Oncology, surgical, and general pediatric services, as well as primary inpatient pediatric infectious disease service. Focuses are on: evaluation and treatment of common pediatric infections; basics of antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship. Optional outpatient pediatric infectious disease component, if desired by the student -- contact course preceptor in advance so a schedule can be arranged.
