Pediatric Hospital Medicine Elective
We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in hospital medicine to 4th year medical students.
Objectives
- Expand clinical exposure to inpatient pediatrics
- Enhance medical knowledge, clinical skills, and interpersonal communication through direct patient care
- Increase awareness of multidisciplinary inpatient care models
Description
- During this four-week elective, students rotate on several inpatient teams comprised of hospital medicine. There may be other subspecialty patients. Students gain experience eliciting medical histories and performing physical examinations on select patients with oversight provided by resident physicians as well as delivering oral presentations in the presence of attending physicians during family-centered rounds. Given its pertinence to the care of hospitalized pediatric patients, students also gain exposure to procedural sedation provided by a team of non-anesthesia sedation practitioners.
- The typical daily schedule may vary but is from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday while working with the inpatient resident teams. Hospital Provider team or procedural sedation hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Several evening and overnight shifts, which increase the opportunity to initiate diagnostic evaluations and management plans on newly admitted patients, will be scheduled to meet the student’s needs and may vary.
