Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Elective
We offer a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in hematology/oncology to 4th year medical students.
Objectives
- Provide training in history-taking and physical examination of infants and children with various hematologic and oncologic disorders
- Gain experience in the evaluation and clinical management of pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients
Description
- The rotation is designed with the majority of time being in the pediatric hematology-oncology clinic at Akron Children's. Students are encouraged to see all patients during their time and these include patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, neuro-oncologic diagnoses, cancer survivors, and others. Students can see both established and new patients. Typically, procedures performed during the month are lumbar punctures and bone marrow aspirates/biopsies. If interested, students can also spend time on the inpatient unit working with the Hem-Onc team as well as pediatric residents. There are also opportunities to work with our pathology and hematology lab colleagues.
