Adolescent Medicine Elective

Akron Children's offers a 4-week pediatric subspecialty elective in adolescent medicine to 4th year medical students.

Objectives

  • Interview teens using the HEADSS assessment (a psychosocial risk assessment for adolescents)
  • Understand unique health issues of adolescents, especially those related to risky behaviors such as sexually transmitted infections, eating disorders, contraceptive counseling, etc.

Description

  • Inpatient service: Monday and Friday morning rounds with attending
  • Detention home (evaluation of health issues of incarcerated teens): Tuesday and Wednesday mornings with attending
  • Evaluation of new eating disordered patients clinic: Tuesday afternoon
  • Outpatient adolescent medicine clinic: Thursday morning and remainder of afternoons
  • Night call/special requirements:  None
