Primary Care Lunch and Learn: The Pre-College Visit: Men B, Plan B and PreP
02-24-2026
By Sara Lee, MD , Director, Medical Education, Akron Children's
Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. Develop a pre-college preventive care plan that integrates vaccine optimization (e.g., MenB), anticipatory guidance on contraception and emergency contraception (Plan A/Plan B), and linkage to campus health and counseling resources.
2. Assess adolescents and young adults for PrEP eligibility using a brief sexual/substance use history and clinical risk indicators relevant to the early college transition.
3. Implement a PrEP prescribing and follow-up workflow that includes baseline screening, ongoing monitoring, and counseling on access, cost, and confidentiality.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Despite current evidence and best practices, many clinicians do not consistently use the pre-college preventive visit to deliver an integrated, standardized approach that optimizes MenB vaccination, provides anticipatory guidance on contraception and emergency contraception, and assesses HIV risk with appropriate linkage to or initiation of PrEP. This inconsistency reflects gaps between current and achievable practice, driven by deficits in clinician knowledge, competence, and performance related to preventive counseling, efficient risk assessment, and implementation of PrEP workflows. As a result, adolescents and young adults may transition to college insufficiently protected against meningococcal disease, unintended pregnancy, and HIV, and without clear pathways to confidential sexual health and counseling resources, underscoring a clear professional practice gap as defined by ACCME.
