Grand Rounds: What is Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis?

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Recognize clinical signs and symptoms of hyperinflammation.

2. Illustrate the mechanisms underlying hyperinflammation and identify associated inborn errors of immunity.

3. Describe treatment options for hyperinflammation and HLH.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Pediatric healthcare providers need enhanced clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills to have appropriate suspicion and evaluate for Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Education is needed to support differentiation of HLH from similar appearing systemic illnesses, guide appropriate evaluation, and inform decisions regarding timely subspecialty referral.
