Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. To educate clinicians about the Ohio law and providing an apology after an unexpected outcome.
2. To provide case examples of the correct and incorrect methodology for the same.
3. Increase patient satisfaction and education that unexpected outcomes can occur when adverse medical events arise.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Clinicians in Ohio often lack sufficient knowledge and confidence regarding the appropriate use of apologies following unexpected medical outcomes, resulting in delayed, inconsistent, or avoided communication with patients and families. While Ohio’s “Apology” Statute provides legal protection for expressions of sympathy, many clinicians are unclear about what language is permissible and how to effectively apply the statute in practice. This gap between current communication practices and best practices limits clinicians’ ability to provide empathetic, transparent, and legally appropriate apologies, and contributes to missed opportunities to improve patient understanding, trust, and satisfaction following adverse medical events.
