Grand Rounds: Recent Advances in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Pediatric Leukodystrophies

07-18-2025

By Sabrina Ben-Zion, MD , Pediatrician, Akron Children's, Akron, OH

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Explore strategies to engage and inspire future pediatricians. 2. Highlight the importance of mentorship and teaching quality. 3. Commit to actionable teaching improvements to better support learner’s development and interest in Pediatrics.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

A significant gap exists in the development of the pediatric workforce due to a decline in clinical exposure to pediatrics during medical training, which has led to fewer students choosing it as a career path. Compounding this issue is the absence of comprehensive, long-term workforce planning to monitor trends and anticipate future needs in pediatric care. Together, these factors contribute to a growing mismatch between the supply of pediatricians and the healthcare demands of children and adolescents.
