Grand Rounds: Social media and adolescent mental health: Fears, facts and family resources

11-07-2025

By Megan A Moreno, MD, MSEd, MPH , Adolescent Medicine Specialist, University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Analyze the evidence describing adolescent social media use and mental health outcomes.

2. Assess and select key questions to use in clinic visits to address healthy technology and digital media use.

3. Identify resources to use in your practice when counseling families about media use.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Pediatric and adolescent healthcare providers often lack the evidence-based knowledge, clinical communication strategies, and practical resources needed to effectively address the impact of social media on adolescent mental health during routine care. This gap limits their ability to understand the complex relationship between digital media sue and mental health outcomes, confidently engage families in meaningful discussions about healthy technology habits and provide actionable guidance and resources to support safe and balance media use.
