Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. Describe the types of sexual abuse and molestation claims that occur in the healthcare setting. 2. Illustrate the adverse financial impact of such claims on healthcare systems through a review of claim examples. 3. Explain the response of the healthcare liability insurance market to the increasing frequency and severity of these claims and the importance of preventing and identifying opportunities to reduce risk.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Health care providers and organizations often lack consistent awareness, policies and training related to the prevention, identification and management of Sexual Abuse and Misconduct (SAM) incidents. This month’s grand rounds presentation will explore how this gap can lead to increased risk of patient harm, compromised trust, legal exposure and a rise in SAM claims—many of which are preventable through appropriate risk mitigation strategies, including the use of chaperones, clear documentation and early reporting mechanisms.
