Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. Describe current trends in unintentional injury epidemiology in the pediatric population, including mechanisms, demographics, and recent changes in injury patterns.
2. Summarize recent updates to injury prevention programs at Akron Children’s, highlighting new initiatives, program outcomes, and opportunities for clinical and community collaboration.
3. Identify emerging trends in pediatric micromobility-related injuries, including common mechanisms, risk factors, and implications for injury prevention and anticipatory guidance.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Despite unintentional injury being a leading cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality, current clinical practice does not consistently reflect evolving injury epidemiology, emerging risks, or available prevention resources. Many clinicians lack up-to-date knowledge of recent shifts in pediatric injury patterns—including the rise in micromobility-related injuries—and are not fully aware of institutional and community-based injury prevention initiatives, limiting effective counseling, anticipatory guidance, and collaboration. This gap between current and optimal practice results in missed opportunities to integrate data-driven prevention strategies and community partnerships into routine pediatric care, underscoring the need for focused education to improve injury prevention outcomes.
