Grand Rounds: Perthes Disease in the Modern Era: Challenges, Innovations, and the Road Ahead

03-13-2026

By Jennifer Laine, MD , Pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Gillette Children's Hospital, St. Paul, MN

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Describe the typical presentation of Perthes Disease and why early diagnosis is beneficial.

2. Understand the role of imaging in the diagnostic work-up of Perthes Disease.

3. Characterize the challenges of studying rare diseases like Perthes and some of the approaches to advancing knowledge.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Many clinicians have limited exposure to Perthes Disease, leading to gaps in knowledge regarding its early clinical presentation, the appropriate use of imaging in diagnosis, and the importance of timely identification for long-term hip outcomes. Because Perthes Disease is rare, providers may also be unfamiliar with the challenges associated with studying it and with emerging strategies used to advance research and clinical understanding. Education is needed to improve recognition, diagnostic decision-making, and awareness of modern research approaches to support better care for affected children.
