Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. To identify various neonatal eye conditions.

2. To strategize referral patterns for various eye conditions.

3. To recognize important ocular signs needed for better diagnosis.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Clinicians who provide newborn care often demonstrate inconsistent recognition of urgent neonatal ophthalmic findings—such as leukocoria, corneal clouding, severe neonatal conjunctivitis, and other early signs of vision-threatening disease—and frequently lack clear, standardized referral strategies. This variability in examination technique, diagnostic confidence, and understanding of referral urgency can lead to delays in appropriate ophthalmologic evaluation and treatment. Education is therefore needed to improve clinicians’ ability to identify key neonatal eye conditions, recognize critical ocular signs, and implement timely, appropriate referral pathways to reduce preventable visual morbidity.
