Grand Rounds: Drawing from experience in navigating difficult conversations with adolescents and caregivers

05-08-2026

By Tara Robare, DO, and Yael Weintraub, MD , Chief Residents, Akron Children's

Objectives (Educational Content) :

1. Explore 2 potential benefits of graphic medicine patients of various ages and demographics, and their caregivers.

2. Illustrate the process of co-creating a graphic medicine book with design students.

3. Describe three common issues in communicating with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) about a poor prognosis..

4. Name at least three cultural considerations that may influence communication with AYAs around a poor prognosis.

Target Audience:

General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.

Identified Gap:

Many clinicians lack consistent training and practical tools for conducting developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive conversations with adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and their caregivers about a poor prognosis. Current practice often relies on clinician led, medically focused discussions that may not fully engage AYAs, address common communication challenges, or account for family dynamics and cultural considerations. Although graphic medicine has emerging potential to support understanding, emotional expression, and shared dialogue across diverse patient populations, clinicians are frequently unfamiliar with its benefits, co creation processes, and application in difficult prognostic conversations. This gap limits clinicians’ ability to effectively communicate complex and emotionally charged information with AYAs and caregivers.
