Grand Rounds: Dental Trauma 101
01-16-2026
By Brian Martin, DMD, MHCDS , Dentist, Celeste Myers Dental Clinic, Akron Children's
Objectives (Educational Content) :
1. Identify factors which would predispose a patient to dental/facial trauma
2. Describe initial management of a fractured tooth by a primary care physician/APP.
3. Describe initial management of an avulsed tooth by a primary care physician/APP.
Target Audience:
General pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, psychologists, and nurses.
Identified Gap:
Primary care physicians and advanced practice providers often lack the knowledge and skills needed to recognize risk factors for dental/facial trauma and to deliver timely, guideline-based initial management of fractured and avulsed teeth, resulting in inconsistent triage, improper handling of avulsed teeth, and delays in definitive care. This falls short of current IADT 2020 recommendations, which emphasize rapid assessment, appropriate storage media or immediate replantation, correct splinting, and early referral, as well as pediatric primary care guidance underscoring the urgency and time-sensitivity of dental trauma management. Education is therefore needed to close gaps in knowledge, competence, and performance, enabling clinicians to provide evidence-based acute dental trauma care that improves tooth survival and patient outcomes.
