It’s inspiring to walk through an Akron Children’s facility. You’ll see kids of all ages and backgrounds coming in for everything from checkups or sick visits to tests and surgeries. Regardless of their age, health or place of residence, our world revolves around our patients. We’re committed to ensuring our patients have access to the care they need to help them grow and thrive.
You’ll meet a variety of patients in this issue of our “More childhood, please.” magazine. Jordyn’s quality of life has improved greatly, thanks to getting the behavioral healthcare she needed to overcome anxiety and depression. Anna Cate’s family shares her story of being born without half of the left part of her brain. They reflect on how Akron Children's neurological experts have helped her maintain her ability to walk and participate on the swim team. Claire was injured in a scooter accident, and an army of medical and surgical specialists put her on the road to recovery.
The magazine also features two patients of Akron Children’s Adult and Pediatric Burn Institute: 12-year-old Gianna and 69-year-old Jeff. Gianna’s advanced burn treatment included spray-on skin to aid her recovery, so she could rejoin her competitive cheerleading team. Jeff battled a complex leg wound for more than a year, losing hope and facing amputation, until he learned that Akron Children’s treats wounds as well as burns for kids and adults.
Thanks to all the patients and families who shared their incredible stories. I hope you enjoy this issue.
Warm regards,
Chris Gessner
