In the fall or 2020, we introduced you to Kamryn who was hoping to celebrate her first birthday and first anniversary of no pain episodes due to her sickle cell disease. On Sickle Cell Awareness Day, we’re happy to report she was able to celebrate both!
While COVID-19 kept many of us from doing ordinary things, it didn’t keep Kamryn from making her appointments with Dr. Bodas. At a visit in March, Kamryn’s family learned the type of sickle cell disease she has is milder than once thought. The discovery, while rare, means Kamryn now only needs to come in twice a year for blood work checkups and has been taken off of one of her daily medications.
“If there’s one thing I would tell parents of children with sickle cell, it’s to always make time for all of the doctor appointments,” said Kimisha, Kamryn’s mom. “No matter how many there are or what time of day they may be, you have to help your child manage this disease so they can be at their best. This disease changes over time so it’s important to stay on top of it. ”
Today, Kamryn is not only walking and talking, but also counting and singing her ABCs! Mom admits some letters may not come through as clear as others, but she’s proud of the positive strides Kamryn is making in her health and in her learning.
We’re very proud of Kamryn, too, and can’t wait to hear about her future successes!
