Vice President, Patient and Staff Safety; Clinical Leader, Ohio Children's Hospitals Solutions for Patient Safety

Michael W. Bird, MD, MPH, is a pediatric emergency physician and the vice president of patient and staff safety at Akron Children’s Hospital. He joined Akron Children’s after medical school at the University of Cincinnati, residency in Rochester, NY, and fellowship at Nationwide Children’s. Mike received his Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan, is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt by Johns Hopkins University and has participated as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. 

At Akron Children’s, Mike has been a champion for patient safety, just culture and employee wellness. He has held various leadership roles in the state and national Children’s Hospital Association Solutions for Patient Safety Collaborative since its inception in 2009 and was the co-lead for the Ohio SPS work from 2014 through 2018. Outside of work, Mike enjoys biking, boating, snowboarding and traveling with his family.
