Dr. Bird is a pediatric emergency physician and vice president of patient and staff safety at Akron Children’s Hosptial. He’s been practicing since 1988 and with Akron Children’s since 1994. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester, N.Y. He went on to complete a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Bird received his master’s in public health from the University of Michigan and is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt by Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Bird is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has a subspecialty certification in pediatric emergency medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, emergency medicine section, a member of the Society for Pediatric Sedation and has participated as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Additionally, he is an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics and an instructor in emergency medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University.
At Akron Children’s, Mike has been a champion for patient safety, just culture and employee wellness. He has held various leadership roles in the state and national Children’s Hospital Association Solutions for Patient Safety Collaborative since its inception in 2009 and was the co-lead for the Ohio SPS work from 2014 through 2018. Outside of work, Mike enjoys biking, boating, snowboarding and traveling with his family.
