Guidelines for student learning in Akron Children's Hospital facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic

Akron Children's Hospital is pleased to provide a clinical learning environment for learners and observers and to participate in clinical learning across healthcare disciplines.  As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, it is necessary to continuously review and revise guidelines and expectations to assure a safe experience for all involved, recognizing any guideline may be revised as time goes on, and situations change.

Vaccination

All students entering Akron Children’s Hospital are required to be fully vaccinated by November 1, 2021. Schools are responsible for attesting to vaccination status of the students at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Management of student screening and exposure

All students will be screened upon entry to the organization.
 

Screening on Entry to Akron Children’s Hospital Facility

Should a student give a positive answer to one of the screener questions or register a temperature above 100.4, the student will not be permitted to enter the facility.  The student will need to take the following steps:

  1. Notify their school / university contact.
  2. Notify their Akron Children's Hospital contact.
  3. Call the Akron Children’s Hospital COVID line:  330-543-8751.  The COVID line is available Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm and Friday, 9am-4pm. If the COVID line is unavailable, the student will call the next business day. Once interviewed, student will be given next step directions.
  4. If testing will be required, it is the school/university’s responsibility.  Akron Children's Hospital will require two negative results before allowing the student to return.

 

If a student becomes ill at home, and is scheduled to be at an Akron Children’s Hospital facility

  1. Do not come to Akron Children’s Hospital Facility.
  2. Notify their school / university contact.
  3. Notify their Akron Children’s Hospital contact.
  4. Call the Akron Children’s Hospital COVID line:  330-543-8751.  The COVID line is available Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm and Friday, 9am-4pm. If the COVID line is unavailable, the student will call the next business day. Once interviewed, student will be given next step directions.

 

COVID exposure during clinical learning at an Akron Children’s Hospital facility

If a student has a known exposure while at Akron Children’s Hospital, once identified, the student will need to take the following steps:

  1. Notify their school / university contact.
  2. Notify their Akron Children's Hospital contact, if not already aware.
  3. Call the Akron Children’s Hospital COVID line:  330-543-8751.  The COVID line is available Monday-Thursday, 9am-5pm and Friday, 9am-4pm. If the COVID line is unavailable, the student will call the next business day. Once interviewed, student will be given next step directions.
  4. If testing will be required, Akron Children’s Hospital will provide the testing:
    1. If test result is positive, Akron Children’s Hospital will notify the local health department and the academic institution
    2. ACH will conduct a tracer of contacts resulting from the clinical experience
    3. The local health department is responsible to trace contacts outside of time at Akron Children’s Hospital and determine when student can return.
