Objectives
- Introduce you to the role of the maternal fetal medicine consultant in managing the spectrum of diagnoses and pathophysiology encountered in pregnant women with medical complications or fetal complications
- Gain an understanding of treatment options and approaches to both maternal and fetal disease states
- Develop critical thinking and the ability to communicate by a systems approach to the team in order to implement a cohesive treatment plan
- Become part of a multidisciplinary, family-centered team in order to improve the patient’s condition
Description
- Observe and participate in the care of women with high risk pregnancies
- Observe and perform (where appropriate) antenatal testing including ultrasound, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, non-stress test
- Observe and participate in patient management in Akron Children’s Hospital's fetal treatment center and attend associated meetings
- Observe and participate in Akron Children’s Hospital's diabetes and pregnancy program and attend associated meetings
- Observe and participate in genetic counseling
- Participate in inpatient management of patients admitted to local adult hospitals including daily rounds, deliveries and other surgical procedures
- Night call/special requirements: Not required but an option for call from home for night deliveries at local adult hospitals
