Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Onboarding & Orientation

Advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants are integral to healthcare delivery. For experienced clinicians, coming to a new environment is just as intense as navigating his or her first provider role. For the novice, the transition to becoming a practicing clinician is often a challenging and difficult period for many providers. Newly graduated providers commonly describe feelings of inadequacy in assuming clinical responsibilities, lack of support, unclear expectations and role isolation.

We offer our providers a broad foundation at Akron Children’s Hospital, providing you with a comprehensive onboarding program. All providers must complete a 3-day onboarding boot camp consisting of 2 days of didactic learning, which include clinical lectures and outline the role and function of the APP medical staff provider, along with a 1-day, hands-on experience at our Austin Simulation Center. Our APP onboarding boot camp is designed with the provider in mind, ensuring readiness to practice is achieved whether you are a new provider, or an experienced provider joining Akron Children's.

The APP also completes a 90-day Checklist to Practice and a specialty-specific Clinical Orientation Pathway, created in collaboration between your division and the APP Center. Available onboarding forms are in the Resources section.

An APP Needs Assessment survey is sent out biennially to assess your ongoing learning needs and drives educational offerings by the APP Center.

An FPPE will be completed within your first 6 months of practice as part of The Joint Commission and Ohio law requirements for quality assurance. Thereafter, ongoing reviews via a bi-annual OPPE process will be overseen by the Professional Practice Evaluation Committee (PPEC). Annual performance evaluations are undertaken at the division level and state mandates are overseen by the APP Center.

Ongoing education competencies are required for all employed advanced practice providers and vetted by the APP educator.
